NYDMV Driver Point System

Every traffic ticket adds up some applicable points to your driving records based on violation. The New York State DMV uses New York State Driver Point System. This system helps detect as well as take action against drivers owning high points that indicate their high driving risk.

However, points are assigned for some specific traffic violations only. As an instance, a driving license can be revoked or suspended in case 11 points have been assigned in 18 months. But, this point system does not constitute the only source of license suspension.

Computation of total driving points

  • Point total is computed using the violation date rather than the conviction date.
  • Point total is calculated by summing up all the violation points occurred in recent 18 months.

Important note: In order to add points to driving records, conviction for violating traffic rules is necessary.

Traffic violations for driving points

There is a long list of traffic violations that add up to driving points total. However, every violation has different points initiate from “0” and can reach to 11 for single violation.

  • Reckless driving
  • Inappropriate usage of mobile phones
  • Red light
  • Unsafe changing of lane or improper passing
  • Signal failure
